ELDERS' HEALTHY LIVING & WELL BEING

We have started another pilot project offering senior members of our Burmese community, regular culturally sensitive and appropriate events informing and advising of Healthy Living & Well-Being Techniques and Activities.

These events will be taking place at a venue in the East London borough of Waltham Forest, mainly as larger clusters of our first generation migrants of Burmese origin are settled in East London boroughs.

We plan to hold these Free events, six in total, every few months. We have kindly received funding from "Awards for All" for an event worker for the project and we contact our Elders to  announce dates and venues for the forthcoming events accordingly, alongside details being placed on this website.

If you are a senior member of the Burmese community and would like to attend these planned events, then please contact us at our Alperton House address or e-mail us to let us know.

1st Burmese Elders Event 11/11/07 - A Joint Venture

Our first event was held jointly with our Youth Project to bring together the Youth & Elders of our Community. The event was held at The Asian Centre, Walthamstow. We had over 100 people attend this event.

Further details and photos will be placed shortly.

2nd Burmese Elders Event 03/02/08 - Welcome to the New Year : A New You

Our second health & Well-being event was well attended, with talks conducted on Cancer awareness and a Tai-Chi session provided to our users to promote a healthier life style for our Burmese Elders. There were many attendees who enjoyed the activities provided, and were very happy to be able to take part in a fun and new activity.

3rd Burmese Elders Event 30/03/08 - Bleinham Palace & Gardens Day Trip

We took 47 of our Elderly Users and their family for a wonderful day out at Blenhiem Palace. It was a very pleasant day and we were even lucky with the weather, which turned out to nice for the occasion, sunny and bright. Everyone enjoyed the trip and found the day to be fulfilling and learnt a lot of the rich history of Blenheim and its famous occupants.

4th Burmese Elders Event 25/05/08 - Prayers & collection for Cyclone Disaster

We held a two minute silence for those people killed and affected by the recent cyclone disaster in the Delta region of Yangon, Burma. A small talk on the effects of the cyclone and the people/areas affected was provided with donations pledged and provided on the day.

We were happy to welcome Darren Harmston, Metropolitan Police, and Julian Lloyd, Alzheimer's Society, who both came along to speak at the event to our members. Darren on Community Involvement and Community Safety, and Julian on signs of Alzheimer and preventative measures.

5th Burmese Elders Event 20/07/08 - Brighton Pavilion & Pier Trip

71 members were taken to Brighton Royal Pavilion and Pier by Coach to see and hear the sights and sounds of a traditional UK Seaside location. They enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Royal Pavilion and take in the culture and history of England within in it. After the Pavilion, the group were then taken onto the Beach and Pier area, where they enjoyed their picnics and homemade foods. A healthy and enjoyable day out was had by all.

6th Burmese Elders Event 30/08/08 - Celebration of the Last event.

Date: 30th August 2008

Time: 4pm to 7pm

Venue: The Asian Centre, 18a Orford Road, Walthamstow, London, E17 9LN
