TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORTS

MBRWA would like to express its thanks and appreciation of the heartening support received during our ‘Tsunami’ remembrance event held at the Fredrick Street Community Centre in Walthamstow on 5.2.2005.

We were particularly inspired to see that although there were people with so many different backgrounds present that evening, we were also able to witness a unifying sense of community concern and a cohesive and generous response to help those affected by the ‘Tsunami’ disaster.

With your assistance, we managed to collect a generous amount during the Remembrance evening. With a top-up from the MBRWA, we have now distributed the funds via the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies with specific instructions for the Myanmar Red Cross Agency to help those affected inside Burma and also to the Thai Red Cross Agency with a stipulation that the donation is for those Burmese people in Southern Thailand affected by the ‘Tsunami’.

Walthamstow Hosts UK's First Historical Gathering of Burmese People.

Walthamstow's deputy Mayor, Cllr Lesley Finlayson launched the UK's first historical gathering of Burmese people on Saturday 5th February .

The event took place at Frederic Street Community Centre in Frederic Street, Walthamstow, London, E17.

The aim was to raise some money and increase awareness for both those in Burma and the Burmese people in neighbouring countries that have been affected by the recent Tsunami.

Buddhist, Islamic, Hindu & Christian prayers were conducted by priests and monks in remembrance of those killed in the disaster. A 2 minute silence was also observed and peace candles lit in memory of the lives lost & affected.

The event was attended by over 100 Burmese people, their families, friends and supporters, and was hosted by the Myanmar/Burma Relief & Welfare Association, with support from the Walthamstow Association of Blind Asians.

Michael Jeewa, Chair of MBRWA, said "This is the first of a number of events and initiatives that we will be taking to help Burmese people, both in Burma and in the UK".
